G20: THE INTERNATIONAL WORK OF THE WOMEN 20 UNDER ITALIAN CHAIRMANSHIP GETS UNDER WAY WITH CHAIR LINDA LAURA SABBADINI AND MINISTER BONETTI

Monday 22nd and Tuesday 23rd February sees the start of discussions with delegations from G20 countries on gender equality and women’s empowerment.

ROME, 20 FEB – The Women20 Kickoff will take place on Monday 22 and Tuesday 23 February, the online event that kicks off the international work of the G20 Engagement Group under Italian chairmanship, whose function is to put forward proposals and recommendations on gender equality to the leaders of the world’s top 20 economies.

The two-day event will start on Monday at 1 p.m., with speeches by W20 Chair Linda Laura Sabbadini, Equal Opportunities Minister Elena Bonetti and W20 Sherpa Martina Rogato, and will feature delegations from the G20 member countries discussing the challenges of women’s empowerment, starting from the central themes that the Italian government has proposed to the world’s major economies: People, Planet and Prosperity. In a world characterised by a global crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic, the aim is to pursue a fair recovery, based on the enhancement of women’s resources in the economy and society, which are fundamental for a more sustainable growth of the planet. For the first time, the G20 is to launch a roadmap on women empowerment that will be presented to world leaders.

During the meeting, representatives of the UN international organisations that will be working as knowledge partners in the W20 work will speak on specific topics, and special scientific commissions and committees on gender health and cultural change, coordinated respectively by Prof. Flavia Franconi and Prof. Fabiana Giacomotti, will also be announced by delegation head Elvira Marasco.

The international gathering of delegates from 19 countries and the European Union, which account for more than 80% of the world’s GDP, 75% of global trade and 60% of the planet’s population, will continue on the second day with the composition of working groups that will mark the start of work in the global context.
